Hello and welcome to Drakkon Lair! I’m Katie, founder, CEO, creator of all things drakkon.
The origin of Drakkon Lair started during the pandemic. The height of COVID, trapped inside, I stumbled across dragonsandbeasties.com dragon creations. I really needed a creative outlet to distract me from doomscrolling, so I figured I’d try my hand at a couple dragons!
The first dragon I made was so teeeny tiny. It was only about an inch tall. I typically don’t do dragons that small anymore—tiny is tough! Shaping fine details on such small drakkons takes a lot of fine motor control. And you always risk scraping or denting other areas as you’re trying to shape teeny tiny paws. I actually figured him to my mom so he’s still in the family!
But once I started making drakkons, I couldn’t stop! Everything was inspiring—video games we played, tabletop &board games, my own blog bestwithchocolate.com! I made a dragon with little chocolate bars in the colors of my logo. And I love the little tongue sticking out. It’s so sassy!
A lot of times I have an idea in mind when I start, but by the end I’ve changed it slightly, or in some cases a lot. I start by shaping the body—head to tail. Then I start manipulating it into the shape I think I want, but sometimes it feels or looks awkward, or I’m not sure where to put the arms and legs so I adjust. And of course the eyes!
From there the arms and legs get shaped. If I’m doing a belly color that needs to get attached before the arms and legs. I’ve had several sculptures where I try to add the belly whites after attaching the arms and it never looks as smooth and seamless as when I do it prior to attachment.
Then come the wings, horns, ears, and accents. The horns are usually the most fragile part just because their attached surface area is so small.
Fast forward a few years of on and off making of drakkons and we have a whole little army! Friends and family have asked for their own drakkons and we’re running out of space, so I wanted to share my drakkons with others!
I hope you like them and get to know them and if you’re interested in purchasing a drakkon, please reach out! Your perfect little drakkon companion is waiting for you to take them home!
